I am a huge fan of all of Ross Campbell's, a graphic novelist, work. No matter what the story is, I am sold because of his amazing art.

Personal opinions aside, I am about to review the book I just got, The Abandoned. The story and art is by Ross Campbell himself. I'm not a professional review person since my English sucks (and it's worse that it is my first and only language I speak). If you don't mind amateur writing, then go on ahead and read.

Like all of other Campbell's work, the art is done beautifully. Because of that I am always a bit biased towards my opinions. I will do my best to supply the best information, however.

Basically the story about this lesbian rocker-chic that works part time at an ice cream parlor and an old-folks home and how she was trying to have her crush move in town. From out of all these pages of her personal life comes this zombie apocalypse. The rest of the story is her and the gang she's with trying to survive.

The characters are pretty good for the most part. There was obvious emotion and some depth, especially with the wordless panels. The expressions were drawn so well, there didn't need any words to describe what was happening. You couldn't go really deep into the characters since it is only one book, which doesn't give the author that much time to develop dynamically. Some reviews online argue that the characters are superficial and annoying, which can make them two-dimensional. The annoying part is debatable. Judging the characters is like judging someone you know to a certain extent. I obviously have a different opinion on the characters than the other reviewers. Therefore, with all these opinion, some could argue that the characters are realistic in that their personalities can be likable and dislike-able based on the person reading it, just like a real person you meet (if that makes sense at all). The dimension could be debatable as well. There isn't a chance, as I said, to develop the characters dynamically in just one volume. From what I read, there is some obvious character development to get people like me attached to certain characters.

The story moved at a fast enough space. Some of his other works sometimes went at a rather slow pace, on the contrary.

I haven't had much experience with zombie flicks, so I can't say this paragraph for certain. From what I gathered from other reviews, there are tons of references to other zombie stories throughout the comic. The gore is intense and brutal, especially within the last quarter of the book. I'm not sure whether the way the deaths were drawn in this book were close to what it would be like in a regular zombie movie or not. However, those who cannot stand the intense gore, such and bodies ripping in half, eyes getting gouged out, and organs falling out, should consider not reading this book. I usually could handle such things pretty well, but even I flinched a little while reading the book the first time.

Another downside is the ending was left really open ended. I know Campbell couldn't help that since he had issues working with Tokyopop which lead to the likelihood of a continuation of the book very small. The book was meant for three volumes I believe but there was some complications that lead to whether there will be a continuation up in limbo. With this in mind, whether buying the book or not could be debatable for you. It is a good read for sure, the content and with the way the book is as just a stand alone, some of you may not want to own it. There is a slight chance that Campbell will find someone else to publish the rest of the series as well as getting his rights to publish the series from Tokyopop (the original publisher). But with the way things are being phrased at the moment in his blog, it doesn't seem like any squeal to this book will happen anytime soon.

Remember How...

...I said I was going to talk about fashion early on in this blog? Well I was originally going to take certain looks and duplicate them with the clothes I already had. I am probably going to do something different with the whole thing after this entry. Here's the thing, I've been inspired mainly by street fashions, mainly in Japan, for the outfits I've been putting together. Take this picture for example.

I tried looking at details that caught my attention, such as the printed fabrics, the large amounts of bangel bracelets and other jewelry, and the studded belt. I took that and used it in my own outfit below

Front view:

Back view:

Close-up on some details:

See you notice the large amounts of jewelry, the printed skirt, the studded belt, the converse, etc. That's the huge similarities between the outfit I created and the outfit the Japanese woman was wearing. I did add a few things, like wearing a plain black shirt to offset the printed fabrics to avoid clashing, the sweater because I took these photos during the winter and it was rather cold, and the socks with the converse.

And that, my friend, was how I take and outfit and make it my own... somewhat. In this case this was a little copycat now that I compare the two outfits, but hopefully you get the just of the whole thing. :]

[Disclaimer: The photo taken of the asian lady was not done by me. But here are some things to think about.

-it would eliminate regulations that would protect women from unsafe abortion clinics. Isn't that an argument that pro-choice people have? That if abortion is banned, then people will turn to unsafe measures to have abortion? It'll risk the health of women in this way.

-Since abortion will be government programmed though this bill, taxpayers will have to fund abortion. I have the choice to not support abortion myself, therefore I should not have to be forced to pay for something that I do not support. I should not have to pay for other people's mistakes when I was the one not doing anything wrong.

-It forces doctors to accept abortions. It'll shut down Christian hospitals because it'll not allow abortion. It is UNCONSTITUTIONAL because it interferes with the freedom of religion, which is a right that I am very passionate about. People have the right to abortion and there are plenty of clinics that'll provide services for that. They shouldn't have to ban the choice of religious funded hospitals that would oppose abortion on religious, moral, or ethical grounds.

Overall, I am granted the right to believe what I want to believe and make choices based on that. It is wrong for government to push certain beliefs onto the people.

Disagree with me? You're entitled. If you make insults to me then that'll only prove that you're just anal about your opinions. I posted this to tell my view. I don't give a damn if it matters to you.

Hair Can Be "Hip Hop"?

So I was thinking something new for my hair since I'm just getting bored with the same 'ol plain long curly hair thing that I have goin' down.

I basically have my mind set of getting bangs or something of the kind but I was still looking through different stuff. I came across some search for "hip hop hair" and I thought Hair could be hip hop? What is hip hop? I thought it was a style of music but there are styles, fashions, and attitudes that spawned from the artists within the musical genre that's catergorized as hip hop as well (along with terms like ghetto and gangsta). To be correct, it is a musical and cultural movement that came out of New York in the 1970s.

I've always like the braids and cornrows that hip hop and R&B artists have. Around my freshman year, I went through this phase where I wanted to be all gangster and stuff and wanted that kind of hairdo, probably under the influence of dating this one guy named Daniel, but that's besides the point. You might find out about that on my personal blog.

But then I read that there are plenty of people that have such braids from just hair extensions. Perhaps if I have money to spend on such things, I might grab some myself to try things out like the chicks in the pictures above and below.

As I searched through the images I found, I remembered Miyavi's current look is a bit "hip hop" influenced as well.

I could always try just the curly hair thing since that's what I already have naturally. It still seems like too much work for me but I guess I can't just naturally have awesome hair.

For now I'm still just thinking of the little changes in bangs and stuff. Perhaps I'll find examples of what I'm thinking of in the next blog.,

Comic Book Tattoo

One of the many gifts I have been given for this past Christmas was a Border's gift card. I spent it on plenty of things including Comic Book Tattoo. Of course the cover caught my eye so I flipped through it and found an anthology of all sorts of comics done by artists with their own unique style of creating comics. I saw this as a tool to somehow improve my own comic making skills and, plus, it was pleasant to flip through.

Apparently there were different editions of this but the only kind they sold at the Borders where I lived is the paperback. So that's what I got.

I never thought of much when it came to comics. From the days I started collecting manga, I was intrigued by the idea of making such comics. I only saw two types: the manga styled comics and everything else. I didn't look into everything. I wanted to know the trade but at the same time I didn't really know enough to even fathom what I was getting myself into.

It didn't occur to me and every style is unique in their own way until around my Sophomore year in high school. I stumbled upon some artists that didn't draw in a style that was similar to Japanese cartoons that I was only interested in and I still liked it a whole lot. It was then when my style of drawing changed radically. There are plenty of young artists on sites like deviantArt and SheezyArt that have not grown beyond what styles they knew of and their work looks like every other young artist's. It's one thing to draw well, but it's whole new level when you draw something that's uniquely yours.

As for myself, I am still developing a style. There's always change within my art. It is evident on my deviantart account, especially when you skim through my normal gallery and my scraps.

What this book revealed to me is even more styles that I never knew of or never seen in a comic before. With this extended knowledge, my art would definitely improve in some way.

You cannot improve without extending your knowledge upon the subject.

tribal punk.

Welcome to the TRIBAL PUNK™ production.

I look forward to informing people about style/fashion, art, makeup, and music.
